Teach the Teacher Project 2017/2018

End Result Teach-the-Teacher Project 2017/2018.

This end-report gives an overview of the Teach-the-Teacher project which ran on 5 primary schools in Yele – Sierra Leone commissioned by the Smarter Hospital Foundation and executed in the schools by EducAid.

The Smarter Hospital Foundation together with local businesses and sponsors renovated five primary schools in Yele to create proper and sustainable educational facilities, like a good school building, sufficient hygienic washrooms, school equipment, water wells, etc, for the children of Yele. This project which started in 2014, was finalized in May of 2016 with the formal re-opening of the schools. As a physical building is not the only part of a good education, the logical next step in this program, was to perform a follow-up project to improve the teaching skills of the 50 teachers on these 5 primary schools. This will directly benefit the 2.100 students and indirectly the future of their families.

Together with EducAid, a UK registered charity that promotes and provides high quality, holistic education among the underprivileged and war affected young people of Sierra Leone, we are to startup-up the program Teach-the-Teacher.  Originally, we aimed to start in April 2016 and end in October 2017, due to the fact that it took longer time to raise the funds and proper negotiation with EducAid we managed to start the project in May 2017 with a finish date of August 2018. Originally the end-date was planned in June 2018, but due to local elections in Sierra Leone and 2 months of uncertainty we finished the project now in August 2018.

The original budget was estimated on € 35.000 but as we only could raise € 21.000 (1€ per effected student). As we wanted to perform the project we negotiate with EducAid to lower the scope and the price but extend the timeline of the project. Beside of this we found free local support and cheaper housing facilities.

The conclusion is that after a difficult start (learning point for a next phase, to provide more detailed information) the teachers co-operation with EducAid, the relationship between schools and teachers and teachers and pupils are gradually improved to an acceptable level. 4 out of 5 schools scored almost 100%, only the Benevolent school was left behind. The reason for this is that Benevolent school had some internal movements in Yele which had impact on the kids and teachers.  EducAid advises to continue the program for another 3 year, something which we discussed in our conversation with the local organization and our board members during our visit in September 2018.

The reason for this is not clear at the moment but during the visit of the board members of the Smarter Hospital Foundation to the schools in Yele, this will be evaluated.

EducAid advises to continue the program for another year, something that we can discuss in our conversation with the local organization and our board members during our visit in September 2018.

Some key figures; 5 schools, 57 teachers, 2,100 children and 10,000 inhabitants of Yele are directly or indirectly impacted by this project.

After successful completion of the school building renovation project of the five primary schools in Yele, we decided, in cooperation with local school principals to perform a follow-up on it. To give the children a better chance in future their should be an improvement of the quality of education. This can be done by improving the education material, but also by improving the skills of the teachers (50 in total). The optimum is to improve these skills in their current environment without interrupting the learning process of the school. In collaboration with EducAid, a certified training institute in the UK, we will start a program to improve the quality of teaching at the five schools in Yele.

The overall project will cost around € 35,000 and Obviously you donation welcome again through rekeningnr NL09ABNA0552434507,to Smarter Hospital Foundation described by Teach-the-Teacher or use the donation button on the website as foundation we have so Dutch ANBI status which is fiscally attractive to make a donation.

Amsterdam, London, 7 April 2017 – The Smarter Hospital Foundation and EducAid signed a Memorandum of Understanding to start the Teach-the-Teacher project in Yele, Sierra Leone. From mid-April 2017 until June 2018, fifty teachers in 5 primary schools will receive education and guidance from EducAid as part of their Quality Enhancement Programme. This education program will directly impact 2500 children in these schools.

The Quality Enhancement Programme (QEP) is a support programme for primary schools and has the intention of enhancing the quality of the teaching and learning in the schools. The idea of the QEP is to engage with the whole school and community to encourage all actors to step up their game and ensure that the students get the best possible education.

This project is the next step in improving the education quality in Yele, where the Smarter Hospital Foundation earlier renovated the 5 primary school buildings and provided improved education, furniture and material.

“This cooperation between EducAid and the Smarter Hospital Foundation is a great next step in improving the quality of life in Yele and its surroundings. Not only the teachers and the students will directly benefit from this but also their families and the community, a GREAT project” – Erdi Huizenga – Tropical Doctor, Medical Officer in Yele Sierra Leone.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to spread our work to a new part of the country. We passionately believe in the power of education to destroy all forms of poverty in the lives of our learners. Our vision is of a dignified, democratic and prosperous Sierra Leone where poverty is eliminated by educated citizens. Adding another 2500 to those being so empowered is very exciting“ – Miriam Mason-Sesay – Country Director, EducAid.
